I missed last nights debate so I have been playing catch up. I came across this article on Mother Jones. Mark Follman’s article is largely built around this statement form Mitt Romney:
But let me mention another thing, and that is parents. We need moms and dads helping raise kids. Wherever possible, the—the benefit of having two parents in the home—and that’s not always possible. A lot of great single moms, single dads. But gosh, to tell our kids that before they have babies, they ought to think about getting married to someone—that’s a great idea because if there’s a two-parent family, the prospect of living in poverty goes down dramatically.
That was Romney replying to a question about gun violence. First off, what does this have to do with gun control? secondly, some single mothers are single moms by choice. As for those that did not chose to be single moms, you know what would help? A stronger safety net. In other words expand and improve welfare instead of cutting it. Third, you can’t talk about waiting to have children without discussing family planning which includes safe sex, birth control and abortion. And that discussion needs to start in elementary school. In other words we need comprehensive sex education in our schools. We also need women being able to easily and affordable be able to access birth control. Then there is that whole “we need moms and dads helping raise kids.” It comes off as heterosexist. Some kids have two dads, some kids have two moms, and some kids have two moms AND two dads co-parenting them.
